13, 1860, Dybbøl, Den.—died Oct. 1, 1951, Ellison Bay, Wis., U.S.), highly original landscape architect whose public and private works, mostly in the U.S. Midwest, are marked by harmonious use of natural terrain and native flora. Jens Jensen (September 13, 1860 – October 1, 1951) was a Danish-American landscape architect. Immigrating to the United States in 1884 from his native Denmark, Jensen was a key figure in the Chicago Renaissance and, along with O.C. Simonds and Wilhelm Miller, played a prominent role in the creation of a uniquely North American design aesthetic, the Prairie Style. Jens Jensen was born in Denmark in 1860. Warfare destroyed his family home and saw the surrounding territory annexed to Prussia shortly thereafter. This traumatic experience left a deep mark on Jensen and would eventually prompt his emigration to America.
